John Fry Unanimously Voted as Temple University's Next President

After word spread last week that John A. Fry was the top candidate to be Temple University's next president, board chair Mitchell L. Morgan heard from 150 people. When Fry was officially made president through a unanimous vote Wednesday morning, the reaction kept coming.

Local leaders have shared their thoughts on Fry's appointment, with Gov. Josh Shapiro praising Fry's leadership qualities and commitment to academic and civic excellence. The Temple Association of University Professors welcomed Fry and emphasized the importance of organized labor, faculty, staff, and students in a world-class university. Amy Goldberg, dean of Temple's medical school, expressed confidence in Fry's leadership abilities and his dedication to Temple's mission. Richard Greenawalt, chair of Drexel University's board of trustees, commended Fry's dynamic vision and service to the community during his tenure at Drexel.

Pa. State Sen. Vincent Hughes and Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson also lauded Fry's selection, highlighting his accomplishments and positive impact on higher education. However, the Temple University Graduate Students' Association raised concerns about the selection process and Fry's background, urging for a different approach to leadership. Despite differing opinions, Shohreh Amini, professor of biology and president of Temple's faculty senate, and Quaiser Abdullah, assistant professor of instruction in the College of Media and Communication, expressed optimism about Fry's ability to lead Temple University to new heights.

Temple Student Government welcomed Fry's appointment, citing his track record of fostering educational excellence and community engagement during his time at Drexel University.
